The Roman Catholic Church is governed by the universal law of the Church known as Canon Law. The Tribunal is the Diocesan Court of First Instance for the Diocese of Springfield and the Appellate Court of Second Instance for the Archdiocese of Boston. While the Tribunal hears cases involving many matters of Church law, primarily its work involves penal law and adjudicating questions concerning the bond of marriage.
